Cyberpunk Cellphones
... Kinda suck....

Cellphones here are kind of crap. It doesn't make any sense that real world cellphones are better than cyberpunk cellphones where you need to spend ridiculous amounts of extra money on basic features that are just inherently already included in real world cellphones. Genuinely, it serves no tangible purpose that benefits the game, that a cellphone you get here doesn't just already come with all of the features already included.
But this isn't real world and there is a corporate monopoly that is milking you dry every day. It's supposed to piss you off. You only really get customer service in real life because there is competition.
Right, but what incentive is there for me as a player to purchase the contacts add-on for an insane price to store paydata in my phone just to risk it being stolen when a notepad off grid works for the same thing and has no associated risk?
What incentive is there for you to do anything that has a high cost associated with it, danger of theft, death, etc?
It's for the roleplay and the theme. It's the cyberpunk dystopia. Once a corporation figures out that you will pay a price for something rarely do they ever walk that back. If you want to cheese the system with notepad, nobody can really stop you I guess.

Memorize works too.

You can also look for secondhand phones with apps, a big part of cyberpunk is thinking beyond what is sold as retail.
All of this besides, it doesn't make sense for the corps regardless. Even with a monopoly corps will still face the demand curve when it comes to their products.

Which, honestly it doesn't make sense economically for phones to be contained within a monopoly. There aren't any barriers to entry in that market today. The technology is so common and readily available that there would have to be significant technological rollbacks (which doesn't happen) in order for a single corp to have a monopoly on them.

It just violates the immersion and makes the game feel less like cyberpunk and more like some odd 1990s mesh with cybernetics and weird nanos.
That besides, I have plenty of fun engaging in roleplay that doesn't involve taking risks. Conflict isn't the only source of roleplay content available.
