Leftover isms in the game's lore

As much as I love learning the game deep lore, there are some part of it that are quite… To put it bluntly sexist, and few possibly racist ones too, which just does not seem to be fitting the cyberpunk nature of things. It may get less 'ism-y when you dig much deeper, but outside perspectives do matter.

Personally, I would love a bit of lore nudging and make it more in line with the struggles of cyberpunk nature, where they function of any other, more cyberpunk fitting characteristics, rather than going after someone based on their sex/gender/race, especially where expectation as players is to make fun of other players who would pick victims like that.

In a lot of ways the game (and especially the game lore) is as much a time capsule of a very particular kind of American 90s internet culture as it is, strictly speaking, cyberpunk.

There has been a lot of positive progress while I've been playing with new staff coming in and having women and LGBTQ+ representation on staff, but there's a lot of stuff to cover and some of it there is very strong senior opposition to changing so it's a process.

It pretty much comes down to stepping into the hot seat and saying 'this particular thing should be discarded' and sticking to it through a lot of opposition, at least that's what I've found. Whether that works depends on who you can get on side and who opposes it.

I don't really know of any examples of this myself. Not saying that they don't exist, but I'm saying that there should probably be a dedicated way for players to report these to staff when they're found, and that I wouldn't be surprised if staff doesn't know about a lot of it either. Maybe a thread can be made for them, or some command like @typo for it.
Just of top of the head examples, and hopefully vague enough to not spoil anything for anyone, but jig in the right direction:

- there is a cult of one sex that may be targeting the opposite sex entirely in ritualistic way

- there is a big personality, bigger than life some would say, that hunts down women, and the group they belong to also have very similar views in that regard and hierarchy.

Those are not really secret either, immies can learn those in their first weeks, and maybe it's just the outward perception that got it wrong about them, I cannot say for sure, but there are other examples too, and I am not the deepest into the esoteric lore.

But i will admit that one of them did give me oocly creeps as it was a bit too like real world.

And here I thought this was going to be about the Red Devils.

That's really a rumourish mishmash of a lot of different player plots over the last twenty years and at least two characters getting merged, but there is nothing wrong in my view with dark whispered rumours swirling from the fringes and you might find that players have made a lot of effort to adapt elements like these towards what players expect of the storytelling in the contemporary game.

I personally would strongly distinguish narrative concepts with gendered elements from concepts that are inherently sexist, it's really a matter of intent and approach.

The non-SD example I would highlight to illustrate how this sort of adaptation can work in practice are the factions of Cyberpunk 2020 and Cyberpunk 2077 like the Voodoo Boys who went from a crude stereotyped 90s cultural appropriation to a far more authentic Haitian diaspora complete with a lot of work on more appropriate culture, language, and beliefs.

- there is a cult of one sex that may be targeting the opposite sex entirely in ritualistic way

This Faction is GONE for this precise reason. Their is specifically one-player who has perpetuated the lore and legend around them which is fine, but they're 86'd because they are straight-up bad juju.

- there is a big personality, bigger than life some would say, that hunts down women, and the group they belong to also have very similar views in that regard and hierarchy.

This is just straight-up wrong. This faction targets people with high charisma scores as they value beauty and consumption of human flesh. The correspondence with the type of PCs which have high charisma not withstanding.

We have done a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes to bring things in line with the themes of lore we've established. If there are NPCs, descriptions, or something somewhere within the game that reflects this, please bring that to our attention via xhelp so that we can make sure it gets addressed quickly.

It is, however, a lot more tricky to handle when it comes to making sure that players have updated information when they're spreading stories and data around in game, especially if it isn't facets of the IC world that players have had a chance to be exposed to properly to become aware of what's changed, etc. It's not a perfect process, but we're doing our best, and trying to catch things where we can. Thank you guys!

Thank you for the explanation, Reefer and Macabre! I love hearing that it was just IC old data and not actually pushed lore, this makes me really feel a lot better, thank you
