People generally avoid actually sitting in public places, it's usually either because you cannot use @tp to describe the scene better, and, well, because there are mechanical advantages to not doing so, so often enough people just @tp where do they sit instead.

Is there much reason to keep having this disadvantage to sit? I feel like the times where it actually matters are niche (catching someone mid-rest and needing them to be in that state) and RP downsides are pretty annoying. Let people sit at bars!

And maybe let @tp override sit places.

It's a realistic disadvantage though. I dunno, I think it makes sense.
And the realistic outcome is that no one sits and we just accept "rp sitting" instead of actually sitting. It's immersion breaking.
What's immersion breaking about setting your TP that you're seated at the bar or leaning on the bar?
I'm always a supporter of letting @tp override/add-on to sitting messages.

Let mechanics and RP work together.

So, I'm a bit against this, both from a mechanics and an RP perspective.

Someone sitting, in any capacity, is at a disadvantage in a fight. From sitting on the floor, in a booth, or even on a bar stool, if someone catches you sitting, you're at a disadvantage as opposed to someone standing with their core engaged, or even leaning against a bar. Even with a barstool, which we think of as pretty open, completely disables a person's ability to dodge out of the way of an attack the moment the feet leave the floor. Being able to hide being in a coded vulnerable state with custom text would need to be addressed.

Also, RP wise sitting places in public venues are actually quite limited sometimes. Hence why people going to a club are willing to pay a premium for a private table just so they know they have a place to sit when inevitably their feet start to hurt. If a place really is packed enough to be considered standing room only, then you have to think about where to sit. There's the bar, but really how many barstools do you see at a club? After that it's the available booths or legit sitting on the floor. I hope you know who is sitting at those booths, else things might get awkward.

Saying this I don't think it would be respecting the ambiance of actual rooms if people were to be able to just imagine chairs into existence for them to sit upon.

If your character is emoted as sitting and there's furniture available to support it, it's best to sit down for consistency codedly. While the current code may not allow for fully customized strings, you can still incorporate descriptive elements into your poses to add flair. Using poses and emotes effectively helps create a richer scene and gives others a stronger sense of your character, especially when NPCs are involved. It's a great opportunity to paint a vivid picture and elevate the interaction beyond simple says and tos. There's other coded benefits to sitting down at bars, booths, tables, etc that people don't think about.

If you're sitting at the bar, and someone walks in, you can go:

.look up at Bob from my place at the end of the bar, glowering.

.slouch on my stool, waving Bob over as I .notice him in the crowd.

It'd be cool if @lp or @tp could append to the end of the seat string like @sp does when someone temporarily disconnects. I'll throw it on the list to see if Mench or Slither can look at it when they get a chance.

Absolutely what Macabre said. I know @tp is an inconvenience with sitting, but you are actually not allowed to use @tp/@lp to fake sitting down if there is functional seating in the room. It is extreme cheese. I have personally been reprimanded by Johnny on this in my pre-staff days. Please do not do it.

Sitting down might come with disadvantages, but think of all the RP you might be missing out on because you refuse to take a chances.

I'd like to pitch an idea that might meet a middle ground?

A bit ago there was a conversation about changing the text color of someone's @tp when it has been forcibly changed by game mechanics. I think in that situation the idea was to change the text color of someone who had been spotted moving and being in stealth to be just a slightly darker grey when someone is hiding in the shadows

What if this could be implemented, but then allow for @tp modifications after someone had sat down, while keeping the same text color? Like when you sit down for example when you sit down in a chair everyone sees in off colored text "Joe Baka is sitting in chair", but then you could alter your @tp to "Joe Baka is lounging in his seat" while still allowing the viewer to know that the color of the text indicates that they are still sitting in the chair?

I still think that you should be able to customize how you look sitting in a chair, especially in the more egregiously godmodded* chairs out there.

*As in, the description of you sitting forces you to display emotions that are not always the same as a character may be feeling at the moment, and RP Godmods you into looking a certain way.

I would argue that the "disadvantage" to sitting should be, perhaps not removed, but reevaluated. It is not as if, just because you are sitting, that you are completely incapable of reacting, should something happen. But that is what the code presently dictates.

Perhaps a perception roll to bring your character into a standing state automatically under implied conditions.
