@short_worn for tailored clothing
We fixed tattoo spam, now let's fix tailoring spam.

Perhaps I am in the minority here, but when I `look` at a character and the entire visible scroll back on my terminal is filled with clothing descriptions, it makes it difficult to keep up with ongoing RP while also getting a good grasp on a character and what they are wearing. Often times, this is due to long clothing descriptions. While I actually love long and detailed clothing descriptions, I'm not sure if most characters would notice some of the details of a piece of clothing, such as the way light gently reflects off the stitching of a jacket's collar, or whatever, upon first glance at someone else.

In order to both make an initial "look" at a character more of holistic experience and more reflective of what a typical person would observe when looking at another person, I think it would be great to revise the tailoring system to reflect the changes made to the tattoo system a couple years ago.

Essentially, when implemented, new clothing would be required to have a @short_worn description in addition to a @worn description. When doing "look Character" you would see the clothing @short_worn descriptions and then when you want to get a look at the number of pockets on someone's pants, the color of the stitching along a skirt's lower hem, or just how someone's shirt magnificently contours over their love handles, you could `look pants on Character` or `look skirt on Character` to look at that article of clothing and how it sits on the wearer in excruciating detail.

I know this is logistically a nightmare and that there'll be thousands of pieces of clothing that wouldn't have this @message at first but the sooner this is implemented, the sooner that new clothing with a @short_worn message would become commonplace. In addition, I bet there's some people (including myself) who would be happy to help revise existing articles of clothing.

This would be so handy! I try to keep my worn descriptions short and to the point but then it removes some of the magic of making em!
There are a lot of clothing items currently without proper tease messages, so me as a player can totally see that being okay.

As devil's advocate, I am of the opinion that a paragraph for a cryo jacket - cool. Maybe a couple for a long flowy dress that covers more - also cool. Your sleeves taking up a paragraph, then the collar, then the buttons, then the hem, the fabric shimmer…I agree with it getting hard to follow.

I like the way some people 'highlight' the good bits - we all know how a T-shirt looks, what's different about it?

The long / short of tattoos was a really awesome addition. Seeing it expand into tailoring makes perfect sense. I've changed my style of tailoring a lot over the years, almost entirely towards being more concise because I don't like the full screen of descriptions and I don't want to subject others to it.

This would allow players to be concise, and to luxuriate in their prose. I think it would be a fantastic addition

+1

Clothing already has two description states. Lots of tailors just like making the one that COULD be short extra verbose.
What's the second one then?
Is this not basically what 'glance' does? If you 'glance' at someone, it will tell you what you can see them wearing, without showing you the full description.
look on
Okay, forgot about forum codes.

LOOK CLOTHINGNAME ON PERSON gives the one that could be the long state.

That does the description, which is supposed to be written as just the garment, not it being worn I thought?
Doesn't 'glance' merely show the title of the garments?

I wasn't aware of the second description state…

I always understood the description to be the garment as it is unworn / purely the garment without its relationship to being worn. Which is a bit different from a long/short.
yeah that's supposed to just be the description of the clothing item without anyone wearing it. again, 'glance' more or less does what OP is looking for. it tells you the names of whatever you can see them wearing, which is usually enough
I do agree that @describe could be used for the purpose I described but in practice it commonly isn't. While `help tailoring` is not specific on this, most the clothing descs I've seen over the years treat @worn as how the item of clothing looks when worn and @describe reflects how the item looks when your character holds it in your hands.

However, `glance` is not what I am hoping for. I do, however, see it as being part of a hierarchy. As an example of what I am proposing, let's use a generic jacket called "denim jacket"

When you do `glance Character` you'll see, "Character is wearing a denim jacket."

When you do `look Character` you'll see, "…Worn over %n's shoulders is a well-fitting jacket cut from mass-produced %color synthcotton denim. %P jacket features five metallic buttons and has a an emblem printed upon its back."

When you do `look denim on Character` you'll see the type of tailoring @worn message that I had in mind when writing this idea: "%N is wearing a well-fitting denim jacket with a traditional western-style cut. Cut from mass-produced panels of %color synthcotton denim, %p jacket features pockets cut into each flank and patched onto the each breast of the jacket as well. Running down the length of the jacket is a series of metallic buttons that have been polished to a glistening sheen upon which the light of the surrounding vicinity reflects off of. On the back of the jacket in glorious detail is the logo for the East Withmore Coffee Company featuring the company's trademark mascot, an anthropomorphic coffee cup standing proud and giving a massive java-approved thumbs up."

I'm okay with this idea if it doesn't make the short worns as short as the brief tattoo descriptions because those are hard enough to get any specifics into at all, when making really specific tattoos.

But also.. tailoring is a pain as it is, filling in all of the @messages. Do we really need another?

I didn't include it in my original post, but I think linking the length of the @short_worn to the tailor's applicable stats/skills would make sense. More experienced tailors would make clothing that is more noticeable or stands out more upon a general look at the wearer.

In my view, tailoring is a responsibility and something that can be (and has been) exploited, can add bloat to the game, and is something that should be done with purpose and intent. So imho adding another message, especially one that explicitly focuses on a short/brief description, really isn't much to ask for.

This isn't something we're going to do at this time. If people find that the clothing descriptions are too long, they should speak with their tailors and ask for less verbose clothing descriptions. Perhaps by saying things like 'I want the garment to be simple and easy to take in' or something. Or, we can start limiting the # of characters a piece of clothing can have. I don't want to add yet another prop, and thing tailors need to add, and yet another way for people to view clothes.

We already have a glance command for seeing WHAT someone is wearing, without seeing the descriptions of each item.

This seems more like a problem with bloat in descriptions than it does something that needs a new solution.

Open to hearing feedback on this, but in my mind, it's either:

A. Tailors use less words by choice / request

B. We enforce less words via code
