Combat softs

So, I don't like to make wall of texts, so simply going to say how it is.

Right now softs can be knocked out of your head. Bam easy.

I propose (my opinion, please share why or why not) that combat softs ONLY, not day to day softs that are regular, just combat softs, MA, Brawling, blade, etc gets updated with 'hooks' or something that makes them stay.

As the only way I see someone using a combat soft is for defense, as offense would be highly unreliable.

Just a discussion, why or why not. Hit me with your thoughts.

Softs take time to offload, so if you get your knocked out, you can continue fighting as before for a long enough while.
The only way to use a combat soft isn't defense. But it might not be optimal to do it alone.

I wouldn't want hooks to keep combat softs in, but it'd be nice to have a bit of balance compared to how much combat characters get out of skillsofts that non-combats might not get in turn.

By the time the data has unloaded to the point that it will affect the current combat, you will have had time to search for it on the ground and pop it back in… or it doesn't really matter anymore because you're probably looking at a red scrawl.

I'd personally like to see dodge and thievery added to the lineup though, if thievery being contraband. A shopkeeper would have a reason to have a thievery chip in his head so he knows all the old fake outs and misdirects thieves and shoplifters are doing these days and how to counter them.

Realistically dodge would be marketed as gymnastics though.

Agreed Crashdown.
I don't really think there's a need for hooks in softs. Good reasons have been given already, and in general, a soft is essentially a free skill. It requires no UE investment on the skill side to get something that other players fully commit to having. It should come with drawbacks. One is that they never allow you to reach the heights true talent can bring. Another is that they can be lost/stolen.

That they can be lost without needing to merc someone is probably a boon that we'd be worse off without.

I also have no interest in seeing dodge/theft become softable skills. If I have any observation to make from my time with the staff team, its that we've leaned more toward reducing and/or removing softs than adding them. While I dont ever want to see them disappear entirely, I think it's an overall good thing that every character can't be everything.

Instead of improving any softs, I'd love to see all softs wear out over use. (Likely would need a price shift down) Maybe just a timer while loaded into the skillsoft, though youd have to reduce or eliminate soft load time. Maybe you get more usage with more Int? This would make combat softs a little more fair to non-combat players.

I also think it'd be extra cool if licensed cybertechs could reset or add uses to them for a fee. If you illegally modify them with cybertech skills to reset use, they should have some kind of indicator and ping with their location when loaded for being illegal.

SK could sell the rights to PRI. PRI sec in red reclaims illegal softs in red, while Corpsec proper works with the Judges to shame Corpies who illegally modify.

Planned obsolescence is profit.

But also probably this is a lot of coding and this would really piss heavily min maxed people off. :x
