Implementations of Kitchenette Reworks
How to do things with minimal tears?

As to avoid things getting lost in the general discussion of the Red Kitchenettes thread in the Theme board, here is a thread for compiling ideas around the subject on how to implement the change in a way that minimizes OOC misgivings.

Feel free to contribute with your own ideas, here are some things that have been discussed on xooc and in the main thread, by myself and others.

1. Allow mixers to still acquire quality foods through intrigue, have juniors sell groceries at a markup down to mixers as a side hustle.

2. Instead of wiping kitchenettes, have groceries provide a limited number of uses per recipe before needing to be bought again from the store. This will phase out legacy alcohol spots, and ensure that mixers would need to repeatedly go through corpies to get their groceries, not just do it once and enjoy forever.

3. Implement an automated wipe to kitchenettes when an eviction goes through, similar to the rest of the apartment cleanup process.

4. Deal with unthemely food discussions IC through puppets. Gangers might feel like hassling rich-sounding foodies in the mix for their lunch money, or corporate executives might laugh at mixers pretending that they have good food.

I said this in the other thread or perhaps in the OOC-Chat discussion, but my experience has been that foodie characters are pretty rarely interested in the actual high-class finished meal objects, and rather want the ingredient key words and especially the generic ones which are more useful. Like the best food object in the game is that salad that gives you like nine simple useful ingredients.

So they really don't want vat pork chops or filet mignon strips, they want the keyword pork or beef and they've basically been stuck with defaulting to luxuries because those are the only options. They want basic staples of regular cooking and have made do because basically everything that's been released is either a page out of Bon Appetit or Nutripaste.

Regarding the original suggestions made here as I understand them…

I'm not sure about #1. If quality means described as fancier, sure. If quality means providing mechanical benefit equal to what corpies have, not a fan. I also worry about the corpie mixer relationship this might encourage. Again, not sure but I am wary of this one.

Not a fan of #2 at all. I don't even like shopping for my kitchenette menu one time and would hate having to keep buying recipes over and over and over again. Just a personal preference.

I love #3. I think I may have even suggested this already. And if players really are transferring apartments as often as was mentioned in the other thread, I think how that happens should be considered.

I like #4 and brought this up in OOC-Chat yesterday as well. Though I feel that I want staff to project the opinions of the masses, not necessarily puppet NPCs to go and smash their face in every time a player wanders outside of theme. Of course, I think there is a point where this may be appropriate but I think caution needs to be exercised and staff just voicing the masses enough to help shape the world would be super crazy helpful.

The problem is that we hear the thoughts and opinions of about 50 PCs 100,000 times more than we hear the opinion of the masses. To the point where too many assume that what these 50 PCs say and do and how they act represents how all members of that class/group are, even when this may contradicts all the staff created passive elements in the game describing the game world.

So this is inspired by a couple of comments in the other thread, and I'll admit it is a bit of a nuclear option.

Complete wipe of ALL apartments Red to Blue, exchanging kitchenettes for economy fridges. Then give those who own a chef's island a kitchenette.

Meanwhile, implement a vending machine in the grocery stores that dispense sector appropriate ingredients into a grocery bag for kitchenettes. Then just have the grocery stores sell food that people can buy, take home and throw in their economy fridges for snacking later.
