Memento vehicles
Just another mono, who knows?

Simple idea, add memento cars zooming around the Mix (maybe Gold too) just like we have shrouds and hoods to reduce the, "oh, there's a mono, that's Bob for sure" that is just something you naturally do after noticing the one mono actually driving around.

I'd say bikes too, as well as aeros if the aeros aren't a total nightmare to code zooming around.

Ultra-badass would be memento NPCs driving around memento vehicles, getting in and out of them, etc.

+1 for this idea, even if it might be a nightmare to code. And while we're at it, make the memento vehicles crash and block roads/tubes.
I would like this if they were messages only. There's too many vehicles as is in the game and I wouldn't want to see vehicles created as mementos only to get stolen.
It's kinda silly to assume there aren't already thousands of vehicles in the mix eh?
Well the whole done hah!
asking for clarity to the use of 'memento' here, first thing I thought was vintage cars or replicas of past player vehicles
Memento is a word that Sindome uses for randomly/template generated NPCs.

I'd also be in support of ghost messages of vehicles maybe. Normal mementos of people currently exist with protections against robbery, though, so I imagine similar coded restrictions would exist on memento vehicles if they were objects anyways.

Even better idea! We could just all be super cool and stop smallworlding things.
Every time some kind of feature is suggested to curtail smallworlding, someone says that the solution is to just not smallworld. That's not going to happen. And since enforcing smallworlding rules is a herculean task, the best solution tends to be features that intentionally confuse players with a smallworld mindset. The game has many of these, and they are never harmful to add.
I agree with batko on that, what better way to stop small worlding than to make the world look bigger? when you blur the lines between players and npcs the game makes you question what is real and stop bothering to second guess everything you see, in the universe everyone is real and naturally that leads to a naturally more immersive viewpoint.

or i'm just spouting nonsense.

As for 'never harmful' i'm not sure of the intricacies for bloat and stuff

I don't mean to be a contrarian. It's just the game already experiences significant lag. I wouldn't want to add more bloat.
maybe there's some way to optimize the bloat by only having it 'exist' when within a certain radius of players who can see it

maybe have a template that it refers to and randomly spawns a car that passes and have it 'despawn' after it leaves a room

Again I'm not exactly knowledgeable on the inner workings of how code space is used, but if these 'objects' were only around when needed before being removed would this help?

The update to ToastStunt reduced concerns of bloat significantly. Most lag is caused by bugs or heavy duty commands being run by staff, which sometimes they take credit for on xooc or shouts.
Agreeing with batko, lag really isn't too bad. On the webclient you can see exactly how much the server is lagging. The main thing that causes lag seems to be NPC combat. This change would probably have zero effect on the lag.

In general I like this idea if staff think it's worth spending time on. I don't think it's super needed, but it would be nice.

It seems to me all the reasons for NPC mementos to exist, and all the benefits they bring, apply more or less equally as well to hypothetical vehicle mementos.

I have absolutely no concept of what would be involved in memento-izing the new vehicle objects, but I can see many positives to have regular cosmetic spawns of armed and unarmed vehicles along various routes through the city, along with potentially less common events like faux freight carriers, faux corporate transports, basically all the things that now pull every player eyeball onto them due to their rarity.

An interesting thing about the potential for vehicle mementos as well is they seem likely to me to be able to closely emulate players compared to NPC mementos, because there is 1) not much variation in player vehicles, and 2) much more use of regular routing for player vehicles compared to character movement.

So just off the top of my head, there are a handful of vehicles and routes you could mementos spawn through that would provide a lot of fairly plausible background for players to blend into (though a few of these may be gilding the lily a bit with specialty cover):

I also think you can get basically 95% of all the utility of true vehicle mementos with simple objects that are just described as vehicles with appropriate messaging.

There may be some future point where there's reactivated freight and much more prevalent vehicle combat that mementos being interactive in the same way as player vehicles has benefits but as of right now the benefits are really just their appearance.

This feature would make me so happy. I have witnessed smallworlding with [insert moderately fancy vehicle] so many times, or even people saying [some character] is the "only one in the dome" with [insert type of vehicle.]
I would love NPC vehicles moving about, parked. Moving again. There is already a lot of code in place to help with this I think in the form of NPC taxi drivers.

I'm more in favor of actual vehicles than just messaging though. Even if they get stolen. Heck, I'd love for there to be more vehicles out there to be taken, even those with lower risk involved. We already have measures in place to keep car thieves from strying to steal a every car they over and over again. Measure I love, though I do thing the cost on those measures is a bit too high.

I would love to see other anti-smallworlding measures too. But I won't saturate the thread here on that one.

Sorry to necro. This would also help with 'Why is this one vehicle parked out front' syndrome, especially if you have them do random stops on their routes.
I love this idea and think it could really add some depth to the world. The presence of NPC vehicles moving around the Mix would definitely help break up the predictability of recognizing specific player vehicles, which often leads to smallworlding. By having random mementos zooming around, it makes the city feel more alive and diverse, and it could create moments where players aren’t as easily identifiable just by the vehicle they’re driving.

I also really like the idea of mixing in different types of vehicles, from standard civilian cars to corporate transport or freight carriers. This would give a lot of room for more ambient storytelling and make the world feel more populated and less focused on just the players. Plus, having vehicles move along set routes, like taxis or delivery vans, would help give the impression that the city is bustling, even when players aren’t around.

I get that there’s always a risk of bloat, but I think if the vehicles are generated only when needed and despawn after a certain period, it could keep performance issues at bay. The update to ToastStunt should help with any lag concerns too, especially if the vehicles are just appearing as objects rather than fully interactive vehicles.

One thing I’d love to see is a mix of vehicles that do and don’t get involved in combat or other player interactions. Sure, we already have NPC taxis, but it could be interesting to have some high-status vehicles randomly showing up or even getting stuck in traffic, adding a bit of randomness to the environment. It would also help with the “Why is this one vehicle always parked here?” syndrome and add a bit of mystery when certain cars or transports seem to pop up unexpectedly.

Overall, I think this could be a great way to enhance immersion, while also giving players a bit more to engage with in the world without disrupting the balance too much.
