Combat Roleplay and You?
or; How I Learned to Fall in Love with my Killer

Many times the complaint made been made in year's past about no-RP shroud kills, and many time the response has been that maybe there was roleplay around the combat if not during the combat itself, or that the game doesn't allow for that because et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Side-stepping that discussion now entirely.

If mechanics were different and roleplaying with the soon to be victim wasn't giving them a chance to SIC a description and location to half the players in sector: What would the ideal roleplaying in these circumstances look in your mind? How long would it last? If death was coming, would you feel engaged or toyed with?

It's kind of a hard question to answer broadly, isn't it? The kind of roleplay that makes threats or combat engaging is probably pretty close to the same that makes dialogue engaging; poses or emotes that convey state of mind and make me feel immersed in the moment that we're sharing together as RP partners. I'd take being kidnapped and drug somewhere to be threatened, dismembered, etc. over just being jumped and red-texted to the vat any day.

Think of every great action scene. The moment when swords are crossed or people are ducked behind cover reloading, shouting taunts at one another or just taking a moment to show off how badass they are. Think of slasher movies where the killer slowly walks up on their victim, their knife gleaming while their body is silhouetted in shadow, the victim ineffectually holding a hand up to shield themselves while begging for their life. Now, imagine both those situations in Sindome, where it's effectively just two or more people watching a red text scroll on screen with limited input until the dust settles.

Other than the dopamine hit you get from coming out ahead and seeing a murder plot come to fruition, what's the satisfaction to be gained there? Think of your victim, what opportunity to derive some entertainment for themselves out of this interaction did you give them?

I'd take being kidnapped and drug somewhere to be threatened, dismembered, etc. over just being jumped and red-texted to the vat any day.

Many players would if given the option, but I am thinking in terms of when the end is absolutely arriving in the next thirty to sixty seconds. Slasher flicks are a great shout though, I love those as ideas.

I think another thing is most people don't interact with the ambient environment enough during situations like these because it's not codedly supported. Imagine turning over boxes to try and block the killer or hiding (and failing) but the killer still posing looking around as you cower in the shadows, your heartbeat racing with every step closer they take. Maybe you pull out your progia and try to dial 911 before they reach you, or start screaming for help.

I think, like you said, SIC is an issue here where every moment you aren't making your victim dead is a moment they're putting you on blast to the entire dome. Now, I've seen many people be pretty cool about this and only post cryptic details about what's happening but you can't rely on that. It's a shame that you can't just approach the other person OOC and sort of come up with a game plan for how this can go that makes it fun for everyone.

Combat RP, you say?!

Jokes aside… A lead up conversation, or even just complete silence with artfully described emotes/poses to gradually increase the tension of the interaction before its inevitable conclusion.
